Lusail International Circuit boasts a rich legacy as a top-tier venue for motorsport events. Constructed in just one year for $58 million by the Qatar Motor and Motorcycle Federation, it debuted in October 2004 with its first major event: the MotoGP Grand Prix of Qatar.
Designed primarily for motorcycle racing, the circuit is renowned for its smooth layout and the use of artificial grass around the track to prevent sand from the nearby desert from interfering with the races. In 2008, the circuit set a global benchmark with the installation of an advanced outdoor lighting system, making it the world's leading venue for night-time racing at the time.
Over the years, Lusail expanded to host a range of motorsport events, with a pivotal moment in 2021 when it welcomed Formula One under a long-term agreement. To meet F1’s stringent standards, the circuit underwent major upgrades, including modifications to curbs, the pit lane entrance, and safety barriers.
Ahead of Formula One’s return in 2023, Lusail underwent significant renovations, which included modernising the pit and paddock areas and expanding the pit lane. Enhancements to the main grandstands increased seating capacity to 40,000, while new track configurations further boosted its versatility.
Starting in 2024, the circuit became a key part of the FIA World Endurance Championship, hosting the distinctive Qatar 1812 km race.
